From the 2030 Agenda of the Metropolitan City of Milan to Municipal Urban Planning Documents (DUP) through shared climate change adaptation indicators and targets.

The Metropolitan City of Milan has progressively developed territorial/sectoral datasets and decision-support systems through various national and European projects, which are actively utilized by municipal administrations and local stakeholders. A key resource for Sustainable Development monitoring is the DataLab, the operational platform supporting the Metropolitan 2030 Agenda, specifically designed for mapping and tracking the implementation of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) across the metropolitan territory.
Territrial scope and additional resources
IndicaMi focuses its activities within the Metropolitan City of Milan area:
-
,575 km² territory covering 133 municipalities,
-
over 3 million residents, making it Europe's third most populous urban area (after London and Paris),
-
continuously expanding, with growing infrastructure integration.
Key Spatial Data Layers
- Population density map (census section level)
- Building density map (census section level)
- Absolute employment index map (municipal level)
Several municipalities have been particularly active in IndicaMi, serving as project case studies: Bresso, Melzo, San Donato Milanese, Pero and Gorgonzola. Results are documented in the "Pilot Municipalities Report”.

The area benefits from a robust network of weather stations, with 17 operated by Fondazione OMD and 16 by ARPA Lombardia, all equipped to measure the full range of meteorological parameters.
Additionally, IndicaMi will incorporate specialized GIS databases and spatial datasets developed through recent projects like ClimaMi and Territori Resilienti, funded in part by Fondazione Cariplo. These resources provide valuable climate and territorial resilience data that will directly support the initiative's work.
